About the Design History Workshop Japan
The Design History Workshop Japan (DHWJ) was founded in the autumn of 2002 as a nationwide network of researchers, historians, postgraduate students, designers, craftspeople, curators, promoters, collectors and journalists. Its goals are to build a broad network for mutual interaction and intellectual exchange between members in Japan and overseas, and to promote the further development of design history as a new academic discipline in Japan.
The DHWJ works actively to provide a site for the presentation and discussion of research on the history and culture of design through activities including the publication of its journal, Design History, research workshops, symposia and other events. Through such activities, the DHWJ shares new knowledge and fresh ideas within Japan and internationally.

Article 1. Name
The English name of the society shall be The Design History Workshop Japan (hereinafter designated as the dhwj).

Article 2. Objectives
The purposes of the Workshop shall be to pursue research and education related to the history and culture of design, and to facilitate member interaction through research activities.

Article 3. Activities
In order to realize the objectives stated in Article 2., the dhwj shall hold a General Meeting and research workshops, publishes the dhwj journal and engages in other activities necessary to fulfill dhwj goals.

Article 4. Membership
The Workshop shall consist of Full Members and Student Members. Those wishing to obtain membership in the dhwj must submit a membership application and gain the approval of the Executive Committee. Current members wishing to leave the dhwj must submit a secession form and gain the approval of the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee shall reserve the right to remove members from the membership roster should they engage in actions that may damage the name of the dhwj or withhold membership dues.

Article 5. Membership Dues, Association Finances and the Fiscal Year
Members shall be are bound to pay membership dues within the prescribed time period. The finances of the dhwj shall consist of membership dues, grants and donations and other income and expenses. The dhwj’s fiscal year, within which dhwj activi-
ties also fall, shall begin annually on 1 April, and end 31 March of the following calendar year.

Article 6. The Executive Committee and its Members
The dhwj shall have an Executive Committee responsible for administration and the execution of dhwj activities. The Executive Committee shall be composed of an appropriate number of members elected at the General Meeting. However, the Chair may also invite a number of dhwj members to serve on the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee shall convene when the Chair sees necessary.

Article 7. Officers
dhwj officers shall be appointed from among the members of the Executive Committee, and consist of the Chair, the DeputyChair and the Secretary General. Terms of office shall be for three years, and may be renewed. The Chair shall be the presiding officer of the dhwj, and direct all general affairs. The Deputy-Chair shall assist the Chair, and assume the duties of the Chair should he or she be unable to perform the duties of the office. The Secretary General shall be responsible for the dhwj’s practical affairs.

Article 8. General Meeting
The General Meeting, the highest decision-making body of the dhwj, shall convene annually. The Executive Committee may call extraordinary General Meetings at their discretion. The Chair shall convene the General Meeting, and must notify dhwj members of the General Meeting in advance. Decisions made at the General Meeting must have a simple majority of members present.

Bylaws
(1) The above rules and regulations shall become active 22 November 2002. The 2002-3 dhwj activities and finances begin on this date, and end 31 March of the following year.
(2) The dhwj office shall be based at the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Tsuda College.
(3) Annual dues for Full Members are 8,000 yen. Annual dues for student members are 4,000 yen.
(4) Full Members must pay an initial membership fee of 5,000 yen. Student menbers are admitted free of membership.

How to Join Us
The Design History Workshop Japan is dedicated to reaching out to group of scholars, historians, designers, craftspeople, collectors, promoters, journalists, museum curators and postgraduate students interested in the history and culture of design, and to encouraging the continued development of design history as a discipline in Japan. To this end, the DHWJ aims to function as a network for communication between members.
Membership benefits include participation in all research workshops and symposia, a subscription to the DHWJ’s journal, Design History, and the right to contribute original research for publication in Design History.
To join the Design History Workshop Japan, please download and fill out the Application Form after reading the DHWJ’s Constitution and Bylaws, and send the Secretariat an email which the completed form is attached with. The Secretary General will then be in touch regarding the initial membership fee (5,000 yen, one-time only) and annual membership dues (8,000 yen for Full Members and 4,000 yen for Student Members).
